Do I need to upgrade my modem?

GlobeTV - Slow Internet Speeds?

The title of this post is a question we all need to ask ourselves especially when technology is moving at a rapid pace. We are streaming more videos than ever from websites such as Youtube/Netflix/STAN, on Social sites 24/7, watching more TV from devices such as ZAAPTV products. But have we thought about the modem that delivers all these services to our homes? The modem you have in your home plays an integral role in delivering the best streaming service to your ZAAPTV device. If it is more than 3 or 4 years old, then it’s probably time to change your modem. If your modem is a basic unit supplied by your Internet provider, then again, it is time to change your modem.

You could easily spend $300, $400 or $500 on a top of the range wireless modem router, but you don’t need to spend that much. Anything between $150 to $250 will be much than a really old modem or one supplied by your Internet Provider. Just make sure its AC750 minimum.

What is AC750?

AC750 simply refers to the Wireless speed of the Modem Router. So AC750 means the router will support 300Mbps on 2.4GHz and 450Mbps on 5GHz, together at the same time, therefore it will yield a maximum speed of 750Mbps. If you look at the chart below, you will see wireless speeds ranging from AC750 all the way through to AC5300. There is also an explanation of how many devices can be used at the same time and the particular use for that device.

D-Link have a fantastic chart showing you the progression of Wi-Fi over the past few decades. It also shows you the importance of better performing Wi-Fi products when you start adding more devices and when you are streaming Video.

DLink - Why use AC wireless?Single-band and emit WiFi only on one wireless frequency, meaning that they emit only one wireless network. Such routers are very affordable but not a great option for modern smart homes, because they tend to be under powered.
Dual-band and emit WiFi on two frequencies: 2.4 GHz (which is slower but with a larger coverage area) and 5 GHz (which is faster but with a smaller coverage area). You see two wireless networks being broadcast. You see two wireless networks being broadcast. The majority of modern routers are dual-band.
Tri-band and emit on three frequencies: one 2.4 GHz frequency and two 5 GHz frequencies. You see three wireless networks being broadcast. The most expensive wireless routers are tri-band.
